Are there genuinely free cybersecurity certifications in 2026?
Yes, but two things need to be kept apart: free training, which is fairly common, and a free certification including the exam, which has become rare. In 2026 the major vendors still offer introductory courses at no cost, but most charge for the exam that awards the recognised credential.
The clearest example of this shift is ISC2's program that offered the Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) certification: it closed to new enrolments in May 2026. Cisco Networking Academy, on the other hand, remains a safe bet for free learning, with badges and certificates of completion.
Put simply: a free course is an excellent way to discover the field and test your motivation. In a recruiter's eyes, it does not replace a certification such as CompTIA Security+ or CEH. Here is what is genuinely worth your time.
Cisco Networking Academy: how good are its free courses?
Cisco Networking Academy (netacad.com, formerly Skills for All) offers the free "Introduction to Cybersecurity" course, with no prerequisites, online and self-paced, validated by a final exam. It gives an overview of threats, data protection and career paths.
To go further, the "Junior Cybersecurity Analyst" path chains several free courses: introduction to cybersecurity, networking basics, device configuration, endpoint security, network defense and threat management. Allow around 120 hours in total. It prepares you for the Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) Cybersecurity exam, which is paid.
Level: beginner. How it is seen in Morocco: a good sign of commitment on a junior CV, especially for a support or tier-1 SOC role, but not a credential that makes the difference on its own. Another plus: completing certain eligible courses with at least 70% on the first attempt of the final exam entitles you to a discount on the matching Cisco certification exam, for example CCNA.
ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC): is it still free?
Not for new candidates. The One Million Certified in Cybersecurity program, which offered the online course and the CC exam, stopped accepting new enrolments on 20 May 2026. People who already hold an unexpired code must sit the exam by 31 December 2026.
Outside the program, ISC2 lists the CC exam at USD 199, and every certified member pays an annual maintenance fee (AMF) of USD 50. CC remains a good entry-level certification: it covers security principles, business continuity, access control, network security and security operations. Plan for a few weeks of preparation.
How it is seen in Morocco: the ISC2 brand is well known thanks to CISSP, which helps. But CC is still an entry-level credential, less often requested in job ads than Security+.

Fortinet, Google, EC-Council, Microsoft: what other free options exist?
Several vendors offer free content under very different conditions. Always check the current situation on their website before you start.
- Fortinet: the Fortinet Training Institute has long offered free, self-paced online training. The certification program was restructured on 15 July 2026 into 8 NSE levels, and the former FCF certification was retired. Check training.fortinet.com to see which entry-level courses and exams are free today.
- Google Cybersecurity Certificate: a beginner course hosted on Coursera, paid through a monthly subscription but with financial aid available on application. Useful for discovering tools (SIEM, Linux, Python); it is a training certificate, not a proctored certification exam.
- EC-Council Essentials (EHE, NDE, DFE): launched in 2021 as a free introductory series in ethical hacking, network defense and forensics, with an optional paid certificate. Current access terms on CodeRed should be checked on the official site, as they have changed.
- Microsoft Learn: the learning paths for SC-900 (security, compliance and identity fundamentals) are free. The exam is paid, except during occasional campaigns announced by Microsoft.
Free course or paid certification: how do you choose?
The question is not "free or paid" but "when". As long as you do not know whether cybersecurity suits you, or which specialty attracts you, spending thousands of dirhams would be premature. Free courses are there precisely to test your interest, learn the vocabulary and spot your gaps, for example in networking or Linux.
Once you target a specific role, however, the equation changes. A paid certification such as Security+ or CEH follows a detailed official syllabus, relies on a proctored exam and is named explicitly in job ads. That is what makes it credible to a recruiter or to a client who requires certified staff.
A few signs show it is time to move on: you have completed a full free learning path, you practise regularly on lab platforms, you understand TCP/IP networking basics and you know which job you are aiming for. At that point, structured preparation will save you months.
Also consider the cost of failing. Preparing alone for a recognised certification is entirely possible, but a failed exam means buying another voucher. Compare the price of guided training with the real risk of having to resit.
How do Moroccan recruiters view these certifications?
Let us be honest: in banks, telecom operators, offshoring centres and IT services firms in Casablanca and Rabat, job ads mostly mention CompTIA Security+, CEH, CCNA, CySA+ or, for senior profiles, CISSP and ISO 27001. Free certificates rarely appear as a requirement.
They still carry real value for a junior or career-changer profile: they show curiosity, the ability to learn independently and genuine interest in the field. On a CV, two or three consistent badges (Cisco, ISC2, Google) backed by hands-on projects beat a long list of unrelated certificates.
Where can you practise for free to improve?
A certification without practice does not hold up for long in a technical interview. These platforms offer a solid free tier:
- TryHackMe: many free, step-by-step guided rooms, ideal for beginners.
- Hack The Box Academy: free introductory modules on Linux, networking and pentesting.
- PortSwigger Web Security Academy: high-quality free courses and labs on web security.
- OWASP Juice Shop: a deliberately vulnerable application you install yourself to practise web flaws.
- OffSec Proving Grounds Play: free, time-limited access to community-built vulnerable machines.
Which roadmap should you follow, from free to paid?
Free courses are a launch ramp. A realistic progression for a beginner looks like this:
- Step 1: free Cisco Networking Academy or Google courses, plus practice on TryHackMe (2 to 4 months).
- Step 2: a recognised entry-level certification, ISC2 CC or straight to CompTIA Security+, the most requested benchmark.
- Step 3: a specialisation matching your goal: CEH v13 for offensive security, CySA+ or CCNA Cybersecurity for SOC and defense.
- Step 4: with experience, OSCP+ for advanced pentesting or CISSP for governance.
How does GATech help you take the next step?

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free cybersecurity course for beginners?
Cisco Networking Academy's "Introduction to Cybersecurity" is an excellent starting point: free, no prerequisites and self-paced. The "Junior Cybersecurity Analyst" path then lets you go further.
Is the ISC2 CC certification still free?
Not for new candidates: the free program closed to enrolments on 20 May 2026. The exam is now listed at USD 199, plus a USD 50 annual fee once you pass.
Is a free certification enough to get a job in Morocco?
Rarely on its own. It shows motivation, but recruiters mainly ask for Security+, CEH, CCNA or CySA+. Pair it with hands-on projects and then aim for a recognised certification.
How long does a free learning path take?
A few hours for an introductory course, and around 120 hours for the full Cisco Networking Academy "Junior Cybersecurity Analyst" path.
Where can I practise cybersecurity for free?
TryHackMe, Hack The Box Academy, PortSwigger Web Security Academy, OWASP Juice Shop and OffSec Proving Grounds Play all offer free access, at least in part.
